Going Grey

I was talking to my friend today and he said he was on a dating site or some kind of friend site and he was telling me about a lady he was interested in. He was chatting online with her for a few minutes per day for a few days and he said that she was 48 and had all grey hair that she wore in braids. He said that the grey made her look older. I was thinking about that. I asked him did it really make her look older or did just the grey hair give you the idea that she looks older. I know when I was little I used to see people with grey hair and everyone used to say when you get grey hair that you are old so I just assumed that everyone with grey hair was old. Until I met my mom's cousin who was 30 and had grey hair. He told me that he turned prematurely grey. At the time I didn't know what that met. I only knew that he was not that old but was grey so someone told me the wrong information, that was in my 10 year old head when I met him.

Then I started to think what if my hair was all grey, no brown, just grey what would people think and would they think I was older then my age. I know when I was young people always said I looked younger. When I was in my 20's I could probably pass for high school age. Back then I used to hate that. I would always get carded at the liquor store when I wanted to buy beer or wine. I used to get carded at the few times I ventured to a club with my best friend. I would think come on people do I look that young? But, apparently, to them I did. Now, about 30 years later nobody says to me that I look wonderful to be 51, or "Oh really, you are 51? Darling you don't look a day over 30." In my fantasy they all do say that and smile and say that they wished they looked so good. Kind of a funny fantasy to me.

So, I went back to thinking that about 20 years ago or so I was working at the library and once I dressed up for Halloween. I thought it would be fun plus they had a prize for the best costume. I dressed up as a witch and I had a black and grey wig on. I got on the elevator to go to the children's room for something and this woman was on the elevator already and she asked me if that was my real hair. I told her it was a wig and she said oh she just loves grey and white hair.  She had white hair but didn't look too old. I would have guessed she was younger then I am now. She smiled and got off the elevator on the same floor as I did and we went in our separate directions.

I guess my friend was pondering the question I asked him about his new online friend and he said well, she looked better when she had black hair and she said she was tired of dying it. So, she let it all go grey. She's courageous to me because I don't know if I would have let my hair go all grey at 48. I probably would do it now. My mom is 77 and her hair is not all grey yet. She has mostly grey but there is some black mixed in. But, her younger brother on the other hand has went all grey. He has been all grey for years.

So, I am thinking that I will  be more like my mom. At 77 I will have a lot of grey but I think that I will have a lot of brown peaking through the greys too. And I am okay with that.
