A Random Act of Kindness
A couple of weeks ago this woman who was turning around in our driveway with her car accidentally ran over my son's skateboard which he had just finished playing with and was taking a break with his friends sitting on the steps. I heard a loud crack, then screaming and then crying. I went outside as quickly as I could to see what all the fuss was about and discovered what had happened. The woman tried to keep on going after the accident, sort like a hit the skateboard and run. And for the most part she did even with about 10 kids screaming at her car as she pulled off only saying she was sorry she didn't see it.
So, about ten minutes later she came back and saw them and asked if she could do something to make it right and then apologized again. The kids suggested that perhaps she should offer to pay for the board she accidentally ran over. Well, eventually, she gave him $30, after she asked him how much it cost. Of course my son didn't know so he just pulled a number out of the air.
After that he was skateboard less. About a week later my son's friend gave him a little board, I forgot what they call it, the board that is, but it was small and the front wheels were taken off the board so it only had the back wheels on it and my son said it was good enough to practice tricks with. So, that is what he did with it. Then one day after coming inside for the day he forgot it and left the little yellow half wheel-less board on the sidewalk in front of the house and the next morning when he went to look for it he couldn't find it. It was like it rolled away on its two wheels by itself. So, once again he thought bad luck was just following him again. So, we tried to find another skateboard online and put the $30 towards a new one. Of course just the deck cost $38 that he wanted and that didn't include the wheels, the grip tape, the skateboard tool, and all the other stuff that you need to build it. So, we were pricing all the stuff and I was rolling my eyes at how much all this stuff cost and trying to figure out how in world were we going to pay for it and thinking that it might be a better idea just to get the $28 skateboard already assembled even though my son and his friends said it was "fake" I don't know exactly what they met by fake and decided to ask them later. So, I put everything in the cart and told my son we would have to see what we could get and what he would have to ask his dad to chip in for.
And then something unexpected and good happened. My son headed outside to go to his friend house across the street and this elderly man who lives two houses over told him that he saw the broken skateboard on the sidewalk the night before and he said that he picked it up and thought that his son could fix it but he couldn't so they decided to buy him a new one. So, they gave him a brand new not "fake" skateboard and told him to enjoy.
I am happy to know that on my block that there are good people not scared to do random act of kindness.
