Moving On In
For a long time the apartment in the other building has been vacant. Besides the high rents they wanted I was curious if there was another reason. I have always liked the spin that people put on ads when they are trying to rent or buy a house, I remember when the apartment around the corner in the other building was for rent and the ad said "Quiet building in a quiet building in a quiet neighborhood." Well, all I can say is that the building is quiet because the building has only 4 units and no kids live over there. There are a couple of fir babies over there though that are pretty much quiet as any fur babies, dogs, can be. I would agree that not much happens on that side of the block. Or on that side of the building. The people over there are either students in college, senior citizens, or professional working people. And in some cases more then one category applies.
So, it got me thinking about this side which is totally different. Besides my son there was, I don't know if the kid is still there or not because he is not outside playing with the other kids, but I did see one little boy at one time over there twice. But, people come and go faster then I can say my name so I am not completely sure that he still lives there. So, I will just count my son and the old building manager's grandson who is a lot younger. Those would be the only kids that live here. So, you would think that it would be sort of kind of quiet but not. They have many other kids on this block who range from about 8-16 years old. And we won't count the kids that live close to this block that come to visit their friends who live on this block so it is hardly ever quiet except when they are in school between the hours of about 8-4ish. So, around 3 they come home do homework, eat a snack and it is on and cracking as my friend would say. So I was thinking in order to make this neighborhood sound reasonably good and to sort of justify the 2k plus in rent they are asking for this one bedroom they have to say it is a quiet neighborhood, with access to shopping, restaurants, bus lines, and other public transportation. All that is true except for the quiet part.
The kids love to make noise as almost all kids do. These are skateboard "crazy" for the time being and they ride in the parking lot and on the sidewalks and sometimes even in the street. So, while they are outside you hear the wheels of the skateboards, many skateboards. My son has 3 and usually at least two of them are out at the same time. According to the kids you have to have one for this trick and one for that trick and then change the wheels and the trucks as much as you possibly can and that means that at any given moment you might see a skateboard wheel just sitting somewhere on the sidewalk or near a curb and possibly on a porch. And on some occasions you probably will see some broken trucks from the skateboard and a broken skateboard just lying on the ground waiting for someone to take off the wheels and put them on a new one. Most of the time all this fixing and changing stuff take place in front of my house with a group of them sitting on the steps chattering about what is best for this kind of board or that kind of board and when I say chattering I mean talking loud, Loud enough to be heard in another country. Then after the wheels are all arranged and the everything else then it is time for them to play a game that was made up during the chattering like skateboard tag with the boundaries being from one corner to the next and the parking lot is their free
zone.
And as always one kid will say that someone was cheating and the dogs will start barking because this will all take place in the parking lot right in front of the dogs who are behind the fence. So, the dogs are barking, the kids are screaming and then the kids make up and decide to make a fort and a ramp from cardboard that they have found behind the tree in the parking lot where the dogs are barking. So, back and forth they go to harvest all the cardboard they can find and sticks which are the fallen twigs from the tree.
After their make shift something is done and played with for less time then it took to make it they start all over again and then make a few runs to the store to get water, soda, punch and candy or whatever they can afford with their collective coins and dollars.
Then if you are unlucky the neighbor who is always screaming at someone for doing something such as stealing her shoes, drinking her wine, using her charger, denting her car, and an array and long list of other things which she has to scream loudly outside at the person in the wrong. The person in the wrong of course screams back and this goes on until the person who did the wrong figures out that they are not going to win the argument and decide to leave. This happens at least three times per month and on a good month only twice.
So, I am thinking that if the person who rented thinking that it was a quiet neighborhood is probably regretting renting the place they are renting by the second week. Unless all this doesn't bother them and for some people it may not. But, at the rate that people move out of this apartment I think that they notice and move on to another promise of a quiet neighborhood.
