Water, Water Everywhere!

A couple of days ago we got some much needed rain. I woke up to rain pouring and listening to rain drops against my bedroom windows. So, I went to the bathroom and thought that it was strange that the toilet didn't fill up after I flushed. I was standing there just looking and waiting and then lifted up the back of the top of the toilet to check the water in the tank. No water. Water everywhere outside but none in the house. I turned on the bathroom facuet to check and make sure I was just not going nuts. No water. I knew that the water bill had been paid and no notices came from the water company saying that they were going to turn it off. I grab my robe and head to the living room and ask my mom if she knew that the water was off. She shook her head and sat up straighter and so my hunt for the missing water began.

The water company had no idea why the water was off and instructed me to go outside and look for the house thing to turn it back on. She said oh it could be in several places and if we had a basement check there. Well, there's no basement so one less place for me to look. I throw on some clothes and pull back my hair into a bun and head outside to see if I could find what they were talking about. I had this search once before and was unsuccessful. I didn't think I would have more success this time but I tried. I looked to the right, looked to the left, rain pouring down my back. I didn't see anything anywhere then I saw something that could help me. I saw a plumbing truck parked in front of my neighbors house.  So, I knocked on her door thinking maybe that she knew something. I knocked and she came to the door with the toddlers in tow that she babysits during the day. She immediately apologized to me before I could say anything. She said that she goes to be at 11 each night and last night her husband got up and there was water all over the house at 1 am. They called the emergency number for maintenance and  they sent someone out at 3am. But, the person they sent couldn't fix the leak which was coming from the water heater so they had to call someone else. The person they called  turned off the water to the entire building. So, as she was explaining this story to me this little older man appears from the kitchen of her house and he said oh he is going to turn on the water right now. He goes to where the sewer is and lifts the cover off and sticks a tool down there and proceeds to say the water is back on. I go back inside and check my water. Nothing. By the time I went back outside to say to the guy that my water was not on I heard his truck drive away. I ask my neighbor is hers on and she said yes. She showed me the paperwork that the guy left with her and she says that we can call the mangement people together. She didn't speak English too well and asked if I could speak to them. I said that was not a problem. So, after a ten minute conversation of trying to convey to them what the problem was, I felt like I didn't speak good English, finally, they got the message and they said that the plumber was going to call me and no sooner then I got back upstairs to my hose I had a message from the plumber.  He got here turned the water on and I was now a happy camper and even happy to wash the dishes I hadn't washed the night before because I just wasn't feeling it and was secretly swearing to myself about not moving into a place with a dish washer. And I wrote on the grocery list that I need to buy paper plates for Thanksgiving.

The rain lasted all day and I was more happy then I have ever been taking a shower.
