The "Dog Nights" of summer

Last night there was a small knock on the door. Instantly I knew that it was little hands knocking. But, I didn't know why they would be knocking at 8:38 pm. My son looked out of the window and said it was the kids from across the street. The kids who are 7 and 8 years old. I thought that perhaps something was wrong. Maybe they got locked out of the house or needed some other type of help.

I opened the door and almost in unison they asked if my son could come out and play. I was a bit perplexed at this request since well, it was 8:38 pm on a Thursday evening and the sun had definitely gone down for the day. I asked them if their mom knew they were outside. They both shook their heads "Yes" but I was not convinced that she did. Their house was dark and the usual red car was parked in the driveway. I asked if their mom was home. They shook their heads no. Apparently, they were being "babysat" by a friend of the mom who had fallen asleep and therefore, they took that opportunity to sneak out of the house to play for 5 minutes. That was their story.

I gently reminded them the dangers of playing outside at that time of night  and asked them if they would like for me to walk them back across the street to their house. They accepted as long as I would talk to the babysitter so they wouldn't get into too much trouble. I told them I would talk to him but could not Garnette they would not get into trouble. So, off we went and inside they went after a brief explanation of why they were outside and where they ended up on my door step.

So, last night the dog days of summer briefly turned into the dog nights of summer.
