Santa Claus is Coming To Town

I admit I have never been one of those putting cookies and milk out for Santa. When I was younger we always spent Christmas Eve at my grandmother's house and we all would try to stay awake until midnight to open gifts. So, most of our gifts were there and after decorating the biggest tree in the tree lot that had to be cut because it was a tad too big to fit in the living room, we were all pretty pooped. So, I never thought to leave anything out for Santa.

But fast forward to now and me with my 10 year old son who surprisingly still believes in Santa asked me about the milk and cookies we never leave out for Santa. I think by the time I was 6 I knew that there wasn't really a Santa as I had come to believe. Probably because that year is the year I saw my step grandfather carrying a big sack of down the stairs. It was a total accident. I was supposed to be helping in the kitchen but my grandmother asked me to put an ornament on the tree she found lying on the kitchen counter. Probably left there by my younger sister. So, I happily ran into the living room and there he was my step grandfather coming down the steps with a huge white cloth bag filled to the brim with gifts wrapped up in red, green and silver paper.

My step grandfather was too far down the steps to turn back so he continued to the bottom of the steps where I was and tried to explain that he was just helping Santa out that year. I really wanted to believe him but my heart sank thinking Santa would need help. But, I didn't say anything just nodded my head in agreement.

But my son is different. He still believes. So, this year he insists we don't forget the cookies and milk for Santa. Since the only other people who will be here are my mom and brother the night before Christmas it looks like "Santa" will be full of milk and cookies after someone goes to bed. Which is alright because soon enough my son won't believe in the "magic" of Santa.
