Friendship NOT Love
I have this friend whom I met when I was 17 and he was 21. He used to live almost directly around the corner from me back then. I was senior in high school and he was working at a place where they manufactured belt buckles. By chance we happened to be in the mini market at the same time which was around the corner from my house. We talked and I found out he lived directly behind the corner store on the opposite corner of the block. Well, back then he was living with someone who was a little older then he was and so we became just friends for years and years. Through different relationships we always kept in touch until about 18 years ago we lost contact with each other and then a few years ago he found me on Facebook. So, now we have reconnected somewhat.
This friend can't be alone to save his neck. He is the type that always has to have a wife or a girlfriend in his life. He hates to be single and hates to be alone. Since I have known him he's been married two or three times and is now looking for his next wife. The first marriage lasted for 3 years. He moved from around the corner to North Carolina with his wife and for 3 years he lived there and before he moved back to California he had already met his second wife who happened to be there visiting family. I couldn't believe it. So, he basically went from one woman to the next in a matter of micro seconds. He left North Carolina with this woman and moved back to California. Within a couple of months he was living with her and after the divorce was all done from the first wife he married this one. She had a job working in a school he had no job. That is him. Every time I would talk to him he would say oh he is in school. This man has been taking courses in school for over 30 years and has yet to have a certificate, diploma or a certificate that says "Good Job". I do believe that he really doesn't want to work he just wants to be taken care of financially by someone. Which is not a bad thing. I am not judging. In between school and finding part time work at Radio Shack in Southern California, he managed to have an affair with a customer, and a baby with his wife. Yes, he was doing too much and reminded me of an episode of some soap opera that my mom
watches.
For the next almost two decades, until the baby was 19 or so he stayed married and raised his son and his step son. After about 20 something years of marriage he was back on Facebook telling me that he was newly divorced and looking for love again. He probably had been divorced for all of 20 seconds before he was looking again. He had signed himself up for a million free dating sites and was hoping that he would be engaged or hooked up within a month or two. I told him stranger things have happened maybe he would be.
He asked me if I was looking for "love" I told him well, everybody is looking for something and if love comes my way I will gladly embrace it. But, I made it clear also that he is not the love I am looking for. Don't get me wrong he is not a bad person he would just be a better friend to me then anything else.
He said his hopes were dashed. I laughed and he laughed. Maybe one day we will both find something or someone. But, it won't be with each other.
