My Funny Valentine

Today is the day to celebrate love. I believe that love, all kinds of love should be celebrated every day not just when the calendar says February 14th. But, nevertheless all day I have been seeing declarations of love with all the postings of flowers, chocolate candy hearts, balloons, cards and posts of love to lots of significant others on Facebook and other social media sites.  I must admit I did post a picture of a card that my son made for me but it was just a silly little card. I didn't post huge bouquets of flowers and tagged the person who gave them to me and declare my undying love to them. Nope, that is a bit much for me.

People have asked about Valentine's Day like it is a national holiday where you just have to do something to show your dedication of love to someone and if you are not dating anyone or not married to anyone then this is just not the day for you. But, I don't do anything special on Valentines Day. Not anymore. Don't get me wrong I have had my share of chocolate covered candy hearts, balloons, ice cream cakes, and flowers. I do like it when I am dating someone to actually get something. But, I don't think it is all necessary, just nice to get every now and then before and after Valentines day. I actually met an ex of mine on this very same day over 30 years ago or so. I was standing at the bus stop waiting to go to work all decked out in my special Valentines day tee shirt that I had shopped high and low for and finally found one in store at a mall. It was covered with hearts and said, "Hearts attack". I paired it with a pair of black jeans and my usual work sneakers and I was off and ready to spend 6 hours of working at the library shelving books.

I was going to stop at Subway to get a sandwich which I had planned to eat for dinner when I got home so I left a little early that day. It was warm like  today and so I had my jacket tied around my waist and my purse in my hand. The bus was late and I was getting pissed that I would not be able to make my stop at Subway for my foot long I was craving.  Then a car drove by on the opposite side of the street and a young man waved to me. I had no idea whom it was and thought well, it might be someone that I saw at the library one day who remembered me so I casually waved back. I thought that would be the end of it. But, nope. The young man in the car circled the block and casually pulled up to the bus stop and I casually backed up as far as I could go. Thoughts of kidnapping filled my mind and I was thinking what I could use of a weapon if I had to. I held on to my purse thinking that it is heavy enough to swing at him ifI had to. But, fortunately, I didn't have to use anything. We exchanged numbers and that was that.

After a ten year relationship and seven of those years living with him and his mother in the same house  and  much drama we broke up. I really never looked at Valentines day the same after that.

Now, I mostly think of it as just another day. A day that some folks declare their love with flowers and candy and balloons and cards and all that is nice. But, I tell the people in my life I love them almost everyday and Valentines day is no exception.
