Rain and Cake

According to the weather forecast it is supposed to rain this week. The birthday week. So, there will be no outside party and considering this place is as big as a large garage, there will be no indoor party either. We are all on top of each other now with only 5 people in the house at times and if we add 10 kids or more that is not going to work out at all. My mom already doesn't like any extra people in here and she never was one for company to begin with and her noise tolerance is way lower now at 70 something then it was at 40 something. So, the party will most likely have to wait. That's the trouble with December weather here. At times like today it is bright and sunny, cold but sunny nonetheless. Tomorrow rain in the afternoon and the next day for the next several days rain on and off so they say. Last year at this time no rain for days.

So, in lieu of postponing a party that may or may not happen before the month December is over my son opted to have not one but two cakes. I don't know why he wants two cakes other to be greedy and he loves cake which is something that we don't have very often or as often as he would like. I asked him what kind when he was telling me that I need to order it today so it will be ready in time. I reminded him we can order it the day before and pick it up the next day. So, he said he wanted chocolate, the same chocolate he has been getting every year since he was 8 and he wants the kind I had on my birthday which was lemon. The chocolate can be big and the lemon can be small according to him. I don't know if he will get two cakes but the thought of him asking for two and thinking that he just might get two makes me chuckle. The only year he had two was when he was around 4 I think and that was because his dad got him a ice cream cake and I got him a regular non ice cream cake. So, I guess he thinks it is about time that he has two again.

So, I was watching the baking show, some Christmas baking show on Food Network last night and every time I watch those types of shows I get all excited and motivated and I think oh that looks easy I can do that, you know bake cakes like professional bakers and home cooks that have tons of experience. Then I say I should bake some birthday cakes and going over in my head what I need and mentally taking notes of what they used and making my next grocery list with the cake ingredients on it. Then reality kicks in. I know in reality I could never make a cake from scratch and make it look and taste as good as it looks on TV. I know that although I can bake it from a box with reasonable success from scratch is a whole other thing. Although, I did make donuts from scratch when I got my  donuts/dessert maker thing that looks like a waffle iron. I made some and sprinkled some powdered sugar on them and they were quite good. But, they were small, round and mini. A cake is big and square and takes a lot more to do.

So, my fleeting thought of baking a birthday cake left my head and now I am going to order it from the same place I have ordered cakes for a while from Lucky grocery store bakery and decide if I will get two cakes or one cake. Maybe they can make it like a pizza one side lemon and one side chocolate. OK, maybe not.
