Stand Up and Down and Everything In Between

So, my mom has this new thing that she has been doing lately. She is getting up more out of the chair and that is a good thing. The physical therapist would always say that she needs to move more if it is just standing up every hour and when she had the therapy she would make faces and look at the woman like she had two heads at the mere thought of her trying to tell her that she needs to move more. After all, she is 78 and managed to live this long without anyone telling her when to move. She did follow the instructions when she had the therapist coming to the house for a couple of months until she got stronger and then didn't need her anymore and plus medical insurance will only pay for so much therapy.

This past week or so my mom has been moving like she hasn't moved before after her stroke. The only thing is that she is trying to move too fast. Think of a baby trying to walk before he or she crawls. Now, she is up out of the chair and stands there for a few minutes and then back down for minute and then she walks to the bed which is not far from the chair and back. I was happy that she was doing it and she reminded me of the "old" her before all this happened. Then she scared me to death when she let go of the walker and decided that she can walk across the room without it and I told her hold on we aren't quite there yet and she gave me the side eye and said she knows her body can do it. I told her ok, let me take your hand and at least help you walk across the room with no walker. I got on one side and my nephew on the other. We weren't taking any chances. She made it across the room and back again and proudly sat on the chair and looked at us like "See told you."

She is not putting on her shoes sometimes. And sometimes she even gets them on the right feet. Those are the good days. Her goal now is to walk to the kitchen and make herself a sandwich. It is a goal that will take a while for her to accomplish but at least she is thinking long term and making goals now and that is something a year ago she would have never thought to do.
