Appreciation
My mom used to say a little appreciation goes a long way. Today, that little bit of wisdom was apparent when I talked to my uncle. My uncle is the type of man who likes saying and getting thanked for the little things he does and people do for him. He shows his appreciation and really expects the same from everyone especially his kids and grand kids. So, today when one of his kids acted unappreciative and uncaring he really took it to heart and it really hurt his heart.
He has 5 kids total. Four girls and one boy. All of them are grown up now and living on their own. His youngest and next to the youngest were the last ones to move into new apartments. The youngest didn't have a problem taking and finding what she could afford on her salary. It is not the biggest apartment nor is it in a fancy neighborhood but it is a decent apartment in a decent area. She found it within a matter of probably a month and my uncle helped her move in. She really didn't have a lot of things and really didn't need a lot because she was moving into a studio apartment. As long as she had a place to sleep, sit and eat she was fine. She didn't desire anything fancy. She was the easy kid.
When her older sister had to move out of the apartment that she shared with her mom, her mom passed away a couple of years ago, she had a long list of what she wanted in an apartment. Things that it HAD to be. It had to be a 2 bedroom, because she had a young son, it had to be on the first floor, it had to be in this city or that city and the list went on and on. Finally after a few months of searching for her "HAD to be's" She found something. The something she found was not a good choice for her, It was too far from her job and with the hours she worked on the night shit that was not a good thing plus she had to get a babysitter for her son and get him to school on time. That was a little of what she had to do but the basics.
Flash forward two years to this date. She slowly realized what everyone told her that her move 50 miles away from her job was not a good one. So, then the search of finding a new place was once again on. Flash forward to a few days ago. Moving day. My uncle is not a young man by any means. But, he is in pretty good shape for his age. He is my mom's younger brother and like I said he is in pretty good shape. He volunteered to help her move along with another man around the same age as himself. My cousin has no friends and there are many reasons why. So, after a marathon moving session of all day and all night into the wee hours of the morning the move was complete and my uncle was so tired he could barely walk straight. Meanwhile, she had went back to work and hurt herself on the job.
Once again my uncle came to the rescue and went to help her cook, clean and put up the bunk beds and whatever else she needed. Then it came. It came quick, hard and fast. The straw that broke the back of everything. No appreciation for him. No thank you. No I don't know what I would do without you. No nothing. He was standing in the kitchen seasoning her fish for dinner and in passing conversation he asked her was she at all appreciative for anything that he had done over the past week. She looked at him like "Why should I be?" and that was the straw. Without saying anything she said every thing.
Appreciation didn't go anywhere that night with my uncle. But, my uncle made himself what they call ghost and pretty soon is going on vacation. I only hope that he has a good time and gets some appreciation.
