Haunted House?

Halloween has always been my number two favorite holiday behind Christmas. When I was little for the free candy and costumes. Mostly the free candy. I loved the big candy bars and one year someone handed out cans of soda.  But, I never got into the haunted houses. There would always be a couple of people in neighborhoods that I would trick or treat in that would turn their houses into haunted houses for Halloween. They would have scary music playing and ghosts swinging from the trees and zombies outside on the porch or something equally as scary. I would run past those houses and never look back. Even when my son was little and I took him trick or treating we never went to those houses. I think he takes after me with that. We would walk right past them and on to the next house, three doors down just to be on the "safe side". We didn't want any mummies running after us.

So, there is a house that I pass when I go to the store. It is on the opposite side of the street from the store. It reminds me of a haunted house. I guess because it is pretty run down and has cardboard in place of curtains on the windows. The steps are made of wood that is slowly rotting and there are a bunch of trees to the side of the house and an old beat up car from 1980 something sitting in the driveway covered in bird poop. It looks like it hasn't been driven since 1980. Parked in front is another old car that has been driven. I know because I saw the old man who lives in the house driving it one day. He seems to be nice enough. In my mind I thought he would kinda look like Darth Vader or something. But, he looks normal enough and always speaks when he sees me and that is usually when he is about to get in his car parked out front which is only half covered with bird poop.

His house, little does he know, it interesting to me and when I pass by I always think that it would make a good haunted house for any day of the year. It looks spooky enough to me.  I can see the ghosts and the mummies and creatures of the night coming out of that house stepping on the plums on the ground from his plum tree in the front making scary noises and all the neighborhood kids running and screaming and vowing never to come back to that house again.

I have passed by that house when it was dark and you can never tell if the lights are on or off inside. I think that are off and the old man is in bed. But, if I were a little kid that house would be one of the creepy ones I would miss on Halloween or any other day to be honest.  I don't know why the man doesn't fix it up especially the steps but I guess he has his reasons. It could be a cool house if it was fixed up and had a paint job and some trees trimmed in the front.  But, like i said I guess the old guy has his reasons for not doing that. Maybe he rents and likes it like that. All I can say is that I don't walk past it a lot. I am usually on the other side of the street at a distance.
