Outta here Grey Hairs!
I was looking in the mirror the other day and I noticed that on the sides of my hair in the front something was happening. Something that I knew was going to happen because it happens about once or twice per month. I can live without it happening but it just comes with old age I guess. I saw some strands of grey sitting there taunting me. Not a lot but just a few, like maybe 4 strands on each side. I know that you would have to be very close up to see them but nonetheless I knew they were there and they grew there just to remind me that I am not getting any younger that those few strands in the front will turn into more and more and more strands eventually. When I see these strands popping up to torment me that is when I usually either go to the drug store or order on Amazon some hair dye. I had planned to grow old gracefully until I got old. I waited for a while before I made that online order and the next day my sister came over. She is younger, 3 yrs younger but her hair started getting the strands when she was in her late 30's. I didn't get them until my late 40's.
So, anyway, just to do something "sisterly" we took a trip to the dollar store. I needed some snacks and there is nowhere cheaper than there so we all loaded in the car, my kid too, and took the 15-20 minute trip down the road. She used to work there so there was one woman on the cash register that she knew. The woman shouted her name as soon as we walked in. My son asked who it was and commented that she was shorter than me. Ok, I am not that short. I am average, in my mind. But, after the woman and my sister exchanged greetings of hello's we shopped until we dropped. I really felt sorry for the people behind us as I rolled up my cart full of everything. But, well, this was the first time I had been there in a while and they had some cool stuff.
We are going through the line and finally get to the beginning where my sister's ex co-worker is cashiering and she is talking away about her catering business and her social worker job and this job and asking my sister about her life. I am standing there while this chit chat was going on just listening and nodding sometimes. So, the woman said a bad word, "Dam", which is not so bad but bad enough she knew she should not have said it at work. So, the woman apologizes to me and says she is sorry to say a bad word in front of my sister's Mother! Meaning me! I was in shock. Nobody ever has called me my sisters mother before. Our mother is 81 years old. So, after I shook my head and snickered some my sister told her no, I was not her mother but her sister. I asked my sister how old did she think she was 12? Either I was looking like an 80 year old woman that day or my sister was looking like a 14 year old. I don't know which one but it didn't sit well with me. I tried to laugh it off. But, those words echoed in my head like in slow motion, "Mother." Which in turn made me think she probably thought my son was my great grandson or something. That made me laugh.
So, back to my grey. Even though it is not like I have a whole head of grey hair or even close to that. Just some strands here and there that are hard to see and hard to find until I look for them and part my hair looking for them. But, that was enough to make me get not one box of hair dye but two. One for now and one for later. My sister thought I had lost my mind but I told her that once I start looking like an 80 year old woman then it is time for 10 boxes and some botox and everything else. That made her laugh hysterically.
