Getting Crafty

I have been trying to get creatively crafty in my not so old age. It all started two years ago when I was trying to think of what to get my friend for her birthday on a budget. A tight one. Even though she said not to worry about it. I wasn't worried I just wanted to do something nice for her. She is my best friend and had gone through a lot that year. We both had. So, I had an idea. I was looking online at different stores and such hoping for some miracle twobgor two cent deal but actually found something better.

My mind was on fire to quote my son. As long as I have known my friend she has had a love affair with jewelry. I used to call her Sammy Davis Jr. Because every finger was adorned with a ring. Sometimes two on one finger. She loved gold rings, bracelets and long necklaces. I am the sort of person to try new things. If you don't try how will you know if you can do it? That's what I was thinking when I found myself at Joanne's craft store in the jewelry section.

I looked at all the colored assorted beads, strings of beads, beads hanging up on displays, jewelry made with those beads on display. I wasn't sure what I was going to attempt to make but I had chosen two bags of beads. One bag had 20 or so silver beads and one had a lot if multi colored beads. Then I overheard two ladies talking. They sounded like they were expert jewelry makers. After my son accidentally bumped into one of them trying to reach for something that resembled a dinosaur I took that opportunity to ask them a question about what a novice like myself who never made anything jewelry wise since the fourth grade and it didn't exactly turn out like I had hoped.

The women were very nice and suggested I make a stretch bracelet for my friend and told me it was virtually mess up proof. If I could string a bead and tie a knot I should be good to go. I thanked them and after a brief conversation of what else to buy I was headed to the check out counter supplies in hand. I came home and got started. Even my son wanted to help until he wanted to make his own.

A little while later my first masterpiece was made. It was beautiful, OK at least to me it was. I was hoping it would be to her too.  And little did I know at the time it would become a creative hobby for me and very relaxing after a long day. I didn't know it then that by the end of the year I would have made over 59 bracelets. Some went to people as gifts and a lot are sitting in a box waiting. My friend suggested I should sell them. I told her I didn't know. They are nothing fancy and I am happy giving them as gifts for now. I said although I might turn into the little old lady who had so many bracelets that she didn't know what to do. :-)

For now its a special hobby of gifts made from love to give to people I care about or who just need a small gift from one person to another for no special reason.
