Playing in the rain
We got some much needed rain for the past couple of days. To my son that means walking, running, jumping, and standing in the rain. When her heard the weather person say the magic words rain today he almost did a happy dance on the spot. He got out his umbrella which was buried in a box in the closet with Elmo. He put it by the front door and every ten minutes he checked for rain. I don't think the door has gotten opened so much since we moved in.
So, after his grandmother realized he was waiting for rain she opened the door looking about as many times as he did. If the rain didn't come soon I could see both of them doing their versions of a rain dance. Curtains were pulled back and blinds pulled up. The weather channel was on full blast. I am sure the neighborhood heard our TV. I have never seen two people more excited about weather. Maybe Josh will be a weather person on the news when he grows up.
Now don't get me wrong, I like the rain too. When I was a kid I jumped in more then my share of rain puddles. I had a bubble clear umbrella with a pink raincoat and red rain boots. My sister and I would race each other to the nearest puddle and splash each other. We would twirl our umbrella's and pretend we were in the movie, "Singing In The Rain". We really didn't sing though more like shouting in the rain playfully. Our mom wasn't too happy when we came inside wet from head to toe. But, we had fun and she always let us play outside in the rain even though she knew what condition we would come back in. So, I am not surprised that my kid loves the rain.
Finally drops began to fall from the sky and I don't know who was happier Josh or my mom. He grabbed his umbrella and asked could he go out for a minute. I nodded yes and grabbed my umbrella and out we went. No rain coats that day. It was sprinkling but not really cold. We walked a block in the February rain and talked and splashed in a few puddles along the way. Instantly I was transported back for a minute to 1970 when my sister and did this same thing.
I almost forgot how fun it is to just play or stand and walk in the rain. Thanks to my son I remembered and we had fun just feeling the raindrops on our faces. Now we can't wait for the next time it rains.
