Happy Halloween 2019
Tomorrow is Halloween. I haven't taken my kid trick or treating in years. When I was a kid we stopped at a certain age. I think I was around 11 or so when I stopped going. My dad used to take me and my sister while my mom stayed at home. She didn't give out candy or anything she just stayed home and I guess took a little "her time" while we were out. My dad passed away when I was 12. We moved and since my sister was 3 years younger she still went with our cousins. I went along too for the walk and to "steal" candy from her bag when it got too heavy and I would offer to carry it for her. She never wised up to that "trick" but that was okay because she still shared when we got home. My cousin on the other hand she would gobble all of her candy in one night. By the time we went to bed if she had any left it was a small miracle. The pieces of candy we didn't like we would give away to the last of the trick or treaters, the ones who came after we got home. Even though my sister and cousin were the same age, my cousin was a little bigger, taller and people would ask her if she was too old to be trick or treating. She would roll her eyes and then look at my sister and point out that they were the same age. It was kinda funny.
Now, fast forward to this Halloween. My son is a teen. His friends are all teens and these teens want to go trick or treating. I was thinking that notion was utterly ridiculous but then I started to think about what he could be doing instead of trick or treating. About what they all could be doing instead of dressing up in costumes as big and they are and going door to door asking for candy. Then I thought that I am pretty lucky that is the most ridiculous thing that they want to do. They are all good kids and if they want to stay "kids" for a little longer that is okay with me.
