Uneven Steps

Years ago before we moved here we used to live in another house, a big house, my grandmother owned, and that house always had stairs, an upstairs. My mom didn't really like to up those steps unless she absolutely had to. She never liked climbing stairs. We have only lived upstairs in an apartment building once. Then when we were looking for a place all we saw were places with steps. My mom would make a frown type of face and she would almost grimance at the thought of going up and down steps. She made it known to anyone who would listed that she hated steps. So much so that when we were looking at a different apartment but owned by the same person at this place the guy said wasn't she the one who didn't like steps. But, as the old saying goes beggars can't be choosers sometimes and that was one of those times. We were desperate to find something and on the verge of being homeless so she sucked it up and took the place with the stairs. A year later the same landlord said he had a bigger place around the corner only thing was is that there were stairs. My mom wasn't too happy about it but she also knew that we needed a bigger place too and a kitchen that more than one person could fit in at a time.  So, we took the bigger place and more stairs. We are still here with the stairs. And everyone who comes here even the trick or treaters mention something about the stairs and it doesn't help any that  a year or so after we moved here the old landlord decided that he was going to put in some new steps but the thing was that he had put up were worse than the steps he had taken down. Let's just say the people he hired were not qualified to put in steps so the steps are mismatched when you get to the top especially.  You can go up and down but you have to carefully go up and down. Running up and down is not advised.

My mom is not as mobile as she was when we first moved in and she could walk up and down steps with more ease. Now, that is a task that is very hard  but what is even harder is her sitting in the house all day. She hates that about as much as the steps. So, we got an idea to have her just sit on the porch in a chair. She would get some much needed sunshine, a change of air and get to see the leaves on the trees changing colors. I thought it was great idea. Her, not so much. She got to the porch just fine but just seeing the stairs, which she was not going down, made her frown and after the frown came the complaining. I tried to tell her that she wasn't going down the stairs just sitting on the porch  and finally she got it. She sat in the sunshine wearing a baseball cap to keep the sun out of her eyes and watched the people passing by and the cars and even waved to one stranger who called her "Mama". After about twenty minutes of that she was more than ready to go back inside where she didn't have to look at the steps. I was just happy she got outside that day.

So, she still doesn't like steps and is ready to move to a step-less house. I can't blame her for that. The older I get I am starting to hate steps too especially the uneven kind.
