Heartbreaking Screams

Yesterday I had a heartbreaking day. We went to visit my mom in the nursing facility. We planned to spend the whole day. The day before my sister said they were cleaning the floors of the rooms so everything had to be moved out of the rooms including beds. My mom suffers from vascular dementia so sometimes she gets confused. They moved her to the nurses station. She was sitting there when my sister got there. She wasn't happy and later in the evening she heard screaming. There's this woman who has something wrong with one leg and each time they move that leg she let's out a deaf defying scream. It reminds me of the scream you would hear in a horror movie when they see the monster but she's much louder.
Yesterday it was like my mom had somehow channeled the other woman's pain and started crying. She cried for ten minutes. I had never ever saw my mom cry except at my dads funeral and my grandmother's funeral. So, this shocked me. I tried to comfort her the best I could but she kept saying they are hurting mama. I caught on the mama she was talking about was the lady screaming.  She could not comphrend that they weren't hurting her intentionally. My mom covered her ears and cried like a baby. Then she told me to move away and go protect mama across the hall. I wished I was a superhero who could protect them all from their pain. The only thing I could do was check with the CNA to make sure the woman my mom calls mama was OK. I checked on the woman, mama, and she was almost asleep. No more noise. No more screaming just my moms tears left.
