Make My Day!

Bianca is a resident at the skilled nursing facility which my mom is in recovering from hip replacement surgery. She is very sweet and kind. She is not in her room much and nor does she talk too much. But, her face lights up when she is happy or excited about something. Most of the time Bianca rolls by herself in the wheelchair and observes other people and the things going on around her. I think before she got there she was probably a quiet person in general. Her hair is the color of snow and that is what it reminds me of when I see her and it is always neatly combed and hangs just below her neck. She has an assortment of stuff on her little dresser that they supply in that place, like a night stand really that sits on the side of the beds and there one of the things that sit there is a picture of two grown men. One looks older and the other younger, then she has another picture of two teenagers both look almost alike. I have wondered who the people were every time I saw them and just figured that they were family. They  had to be since they sort of looked like her. Sort of like a young version of her but just a male. I figured probably her son or grandson's.

Well, Bianca was in a very good mood yesterday. I think that my nephew reminds her of her son. I saw her son once when he came to take her out to dinner. He was really nice too and she was just over the moon to see him. When he came he surprised her and she was laughing and smiling and talking to him. He helped get her dressed and off they went, a smiling Bianca and her son. So, I was thinking that had to be a picture of him when he was younger.  So, my nephew, who is nosier then nosey asked her who was on the picture and she said those were her babies and that she had twins. She was happily talking about them, even though it was a little hard to understand her but from the twinkle and the pride in her eyes when she talked you could tell she was just happy talking about them. She talked for a few minutes and then went about the task of eating her dinner from the dinner tray. She eats in her room and I really can't blame her for that. The dinning room is usually full and usually so noisy you can't hear yourself think between the chatter of the residents and the volume of the TV that is on but nobody watches the noise level reaches a pitch of a small stadium at a baseball game when the fans are rooting for their favorite teams. You can hear these people and the noise from your room. I think she eats lunch in there but dinner time is a time of relaxation for her and she happily and quietly eats her food in her room.

When we are there at dinner time my mom eats in her room too. She told us she probably like Bianca, can't stand the noise of the dinning room.  Too much chatter for both of them.

So, after dinner and after the trays were removed from the rooms it was time for both Bianca and my mom to rest because both of them almost in unison laid back down in the their beds.
It was sort of funny. We said our good byes to them and Bianca smiled and waved and then we departed past the dinning room where all the chatter and noise was still going on. This woman that is new there, reminds me of my grandmother, she started what was to become a mass of waves and good byes to us. She said good bye when we walked by and so everyone else chimed in too. It reminded me of scene from Cheers, the TV show, when Norm walked in the bar and they all said "Norm" that is what it was like. Although, the only name they knew was my son's name, because after all he has given himself the title of "greeter" and says hello to everyone, they all know who he is. But, they all shouted and waved and it was pretty fantastic I must say.
They made our day and I hope that in some way we made theirs too.
