Fast Freddie
The man who lives at the corner who is always hanging out with his friends who seem to be down there all the time was down there the other day when I had my adventure to the corner store there. I hadn't slept well and needed a bottle or can of coke or pepsi to get me through the rest of the day and since I was not feeling the walk a few blocks up to the only other store which would probably be just as expensive or more expensive I just decided to walk to the store that I don't like much going to. So, I picked the mid afternoon to walk down there thinking that it would be too early for all the old men and one middle aged man to hang out and drink and smoke and cuss. I walked down the steps and tried to see what I could see from my house to the corner. I was happy that I didn't see anyone at the corner.
So, I happily walked to my destination and then as I got closer and closer I saw "Fast Freddie" I have affectionately nicknamed him that because he talks sort of fast. He was standing there behind this van, why I couldn't see him at first, with this other woman that I have seen from time to time at the other corner store. She was standing there with her arms crossed and looking very much engaged in what Fast Freddie was saying. I was not close enough to hear yet. When I did reach the point where I could hear she squinted at me and said a hello and asked me how my son was doing. Fast Freddie had paused the conversation with her so she could talk to me for a minute. Then he went on with his conversation where he left off about the case of who stole her garbage can. Fast Freddie was telling her about the usual suspects in the neighborhood. From what I could tell his number one suspect was someone called Bumpy whose real name was Lola. Apparently, according to Fast Freddy she had a habit of taking things that didn't belong to her from other people's yards and I guess that included garbage cans at the curb.
Well, I went in and found my beverage and got a bottle of juice for my son and five dollars and some change later I was out the door. I tell you it is funny that this store the cashiers never use a register to add things up they add them up in their head, the husband and wife that are always there and then they say oh $5.10 all together. So, anyway, I bagged up my two things plus a rice crispy treat for my mom and son and was on my way back home passing Fast Freddie as I went along. Once again the woman he was talking to stopped me and said for me to have a blessed day. I told her I would and wished her the same. Fast Freddie looked annoyed that she stopped him from talking to talk to me but as soon as I took a few steps away he continued with his neighborhood gossip this time about someone name LuLu.
I am tired today too and may need something but I think that I will "borrow" a can of coke from my brother's stash and skip the walk down the street today and over the weekend go shopping to the grocery store. Although, my walks down there are never boring.
