Sliver Sidewalks
Last week noticed something a little odd outside. I noticed that about 5 or 6 neighborhood kids plus my own son were kneeling on the sidewalk looking at something. At first glance I thought that maybe they were cleaning up the litter that I tell my son not to put on the ground and remind him and his friends that the garbage can is just a few feet from where they play. Then I snapped back to my senses. No way would they voluntarily pick up their candy papers or soda cans that they casually tossed on the ground without me telling them. So, I looked again this time taking a closer look and going down a few steps. Then I noticed the old man who lives next door a few steps away from where they were talking to them. My first thought was, "What have they done now?" Since three weeks ago the old man swore that he saw one of them sitting on his roof but he didn't know who it was. Neither do I. But, as I got closer to the action I noticed that there were sliver coins on the ground, nickles, dimes and quarters. The kids were all picking them up like they had discovered gold.
Afterwards, when my son came in to count his bounty of coins I asked him why there were so many coins on the ground. He said that the old man next door told them that he had a dream that he woke up and the street were covered with money, gold coins, and he thought that the dream was so real until he woke up. So, he thought that it would be a good idea to sort of make his dream come true in a way. So, he got the idea of getting all the change he had in his house and giving it away to them as in throwing it on the ground and letting them pick it up. I don't know how much he threw on the ground for them but my son scooped up about $7 in change. One other boy was bragging that he thinks he had about $20 because his pockets felt that full. The youngest kid, who was 5, counted his and said he was rich with his $2 he picked up. So, I can only guess it was a pretty good amount that he threw on the ground for them to pick up like pinata candy from a broken pinata. That is what they reminded me of.
Everyone was happy with whatever they had managed to scoop up and a couple of them ran to the store to spend some of what they got. By the end of the night I think that most of them were on sugar highs from their store runs throughout the rest of the day.
