What a Difference A Loaf of Bread Makes

At the end of the day around 8 pm or so the corner store near my house closes it's doors for the day and at that time the kids from the neighborhood come by and the owner gives them the left over bread or pastry that people didn't buy during the day. I thought this was a nice gester instead of throwing it out he would rather give it to them and let them eat it. My son is one of the kids who goes and gets the bread, the baguettes.

I noticed that one kid goes each and every day. He never misses a day and he is always the first one who finishes his. He basically gobbles it down like it is his dinner. I always felt that there was something more going on with that one kid then the rest but I didn't really want to ask him because I didn't want to embarrass him so instead of asking him I would just tell my son to give him a plate of what we were having for dinner. He would gladly take the plate and and eat it quietly on the steps of my porch and say thanks to my son and say he is like family.

So, one day he and my son were outside just talking about some game that they play and then he told my son that sometimes he doesn't eat dinner. My son asked him why and he said that basically his family was struggling and sometimes there wasn't enough food and he would rather let his sister who is pregnant eat and he would just wait for the free bread and eat that for dinner. I almost cried when I overheard that. So, I made his family a big pan of spaghetti it was not much but I was hoping it was enough to give them a couple of meals out of it. I just told the kid to take it home and enjoy.

I have been through a lot of struggles in my life more then I can count on both hands and some toes too and I know how it is to be hungry and not have anything to eat. So, if I can give someone a meal I will. The kid said to me thank you so much. I told him no thanks necessary just enjoy.
