Rainbow gardens past
I miss many things about my grandmother. I miss her smile, hugs, laugh, cooking , sense of humor and I even miss her garden. I think my grandmother was the only one in my family who had a green thumb. I did okay with house plants most of the time. But my grandmother could make just about anything grow. She always had a garden. In the spring when flowers bloomed my grandmother would have so many different flowers blooming in the front yard I called it Nana's rainbow garden when I was younger. I loved the colors and they reminded me of a rainbow. Sometimes she'd let me help her water them if I was careful. I would unwind the hose and turn on the water and spray the ground with a fine mist from the nozzle like Nana instructed me to do.
The backyard had a pear tree and an apple tree and some tree that had berries on it we weren't supposed to eat. We found that out when one of my cousins attempted to eat the berry pretend berry burger that we made at our pretend restaurant. My sister and two cousins loved playing in the backyard. Before hr could take a bite of the pretend Burger Nana came to the top of the stairs and yelled his name. He dropped it and we were told not to eat them only the apples and pears and the plums that hung over the fence from the neighbors yard but first we had to let Nana inspect and wash them.
On our walk today, Josh and I, we passed by a plant just sitting there growing on the curb. It reminded me of one of Nana's plants she grew in a pot. When we moved from Nana's house after she died there were 2 potted plants left behind. I wished I could have taken them with us but it just wasn't in the cards like a lot vof things during that time. I would like to think they were well taken care of after our departure but I doubt it. We passed by the house a few times since leaving and absolutely nothing is the same no plants to be seen and the backyard all cemented now with a few tables and chairs sitting where a rainbow of flowers and fruit trees used to be.
The house is different as it should be. Nothing remains the same except maybe memories.
