Mistaken Identity
I had to go the grocery store today to pick up the ingredients for tacos. My mom insisted that we have tacos for dinner. I swear she could eat tacos for breakfast, lunch and dinner, 7 days a week. My son told her that she is going to turn into a taco and she laughed. But, that is what she wanted so off to the store we went. My son wanted to go to a particular grocery store for reasons he wouldn't tell me in the car. Since it was a nice day for a little drive we went to that one, further away but lower prices, somewhat lower as food goes. I got the stuff for my mom's tacos and what my son requested, kool aid jammers. I told him we could have gotten that at the closer store but he said that store had them on sale for 2 for $5 and he figured he could get two. I didn't argue with him. It made sense to him so it made sense to me too. So, we are standing in line waiting to be checked out by the newly trained checker. I knew this because she told the woman in front of me and I heard. This older woman stood in the line behind us and she asked my son where was his mom. We both looked at her like like "what?" but I figured that maybe she didn't see me and I turned around and she smiled and said hello. She was sort of hunched over her basket and had about the same amount of items we had. Her grey hair sort of hung over one eye and I thought maybe that is why she didn't see me standing there with my son. So, I said hello to her back and she said that she hadn't seen us in a long time. I was thinking I was pretty sure I hadn't seen this woman in my life but let her continue and just sort of smiled as I finished putting the last items on the counter. Sometimes people confuse me for my sister. My sister used to work at a pizza place and people used to see her all the time and we look enough alike that people sometimes, especially the older ones, mistake me for her. I thought that this was perhaps one of those cases.
She polietly asked my son what grade he was in now and then she turned her attention back to me and asked where my daughter was. Well, there went that theory that she might have mistaken me for my sister because neither of us has a daughter. Although, my sister does have a grown step daughter. I told her I didn't have a daughter only a son. She smiled and laughed and said that she must have gotten me confused with someone else. She said she lived in the same city as me and could have sworn that I was her granddaughter's friend. We both laughed about it and she continued to compliment my son whose eyes were glued to my phone since waiting in line according to him is more boring then watching paint dry. He looked up when she asked him a couple of questions and answered then turned his attention back to his youtube video he was watching on the phone.
I actually like meeting and talking to people in the grocery store. Most of the time nobody talks to anybody as we all are rolling our carts down the aisles trying to hurry up and get what we need and usually the only thing we utter to each other is excuse me if someone is standing in front what we need to get off a shelf. Sometimes we might accidently bump someone's cart and then we smile and say excuse me. But, that is the most talking I usually do in the store unless I need to find something that I don't see. So, today was nice talking with Betty, the stranger who thought I was her granddaughter's friend.
