Morris The Cat

Sometimes there is a cat that shows up and he just appears out of nowhere and sits on the fence or he will sit on top of the car that sits in the driveway next door. I don't know who is owner is or where he lives but from time to time he comes for what my son likes to call a visit. He is very friendly and will let just about anyone pet him if he is in the mood. When he comes for a visit the dog next door, Yoshi barks and barks but that doesn't scare him in the least. He probably knows that little Yoshi can't get to him because he is behind a locked fence. So, he happily jumps on Yoshi's owner's car and suns himself if the sun is out and if not he sits on the fence near our porch. He wears a red collar and a name tag dangling from the collar but I never got close enough to find out what his name is.

He is orange and white with stripes, white stripes and I like to call him Morris because he reminds me of the cat in the cat food commercials that were on back in the day and that cat's name was Morris the cat. So, for us that is his nickname until we find out his real name which may never happen. He also reminds me of another cat that I called Morris.

When my oldest nephew, now 28, was about 2 we lived in a duplex and down the block this woman had moved. She was a short woman with red hair and always wore a skirt or pants all the way over her stomach almost up to her chin. She was very nice and lived with her son who was a little younger then me. She moved one day and forgot the cat. I don't know how she forgot her cat. Maybe she couldn't find him because he was an outdoor cat. Maybe when she called him she couldn't find him because he didn't answer her or come. Or maybe that cat just made up his mind he had enough of his human and wanted to adopt another one. But, whatever happened, he was left alone. She never came back to ask about him either so I have no idea how far she moved away. One day, he just showed up at the door meowing. He didn't want to come in, we had a dog at the time, he was just hungry so we fed him. We fed him at the same time everyday as it turned out twice a day for years. He came to visit us and eat for about 7 years after his first owner moved away. Then one day we didn't see him. He didn't come to eat. We looked for him and called him, by that time he was answering to Morris. But, we couldn't find him for two days. We thought the worse right away because it was not like him not to come for food and playtime.

On the 3rd day looking for him we found him. Morris had passed away and he was under the house. He looked like he was sleeping but he was gone. We all cried that day. Our cat which we had come to love was gone just as suddenly as he came.

Joshua has fallen in love with this cat now who looks like Morris. We hadn't seen him since the end of summer and then about a month ago he was back. It was kind of a warm day and there he was sunning himself on the car and then on the sidewalk. Joshua quickly ran to get the camera to take a picture of him just in case he said. I nodded my head in agreement knowing what he met. We haven't seen him again in about a month and today my son asked did I think he was okay and he hoped that his human got him something for Christmas. I told him I hope he is okay and I am sure he got a little cat gift for the holidays. That made him smile.
