Unexpected Treasure

For the first time in a long time we don't  live in a place with a background or a front yard so that means we take walks from time to time and on our walks we discover little treasures.

About a month ago we had the opportunity to drive to the Doubletree hotel so my sister could apply for a job she saw listed on a job website. We had the pleasure of staying there once about 5 years ago when Josh was 4. The most exciting part of the trip for him besides the indoor pool was the cookie you got when you checked in. He wanted to get a cookie every hour. I told him much to his surprise that wasn't the way it worked. Although we did manage to get one on the way out from another guest who probably took pity on the cookie less little 4 year old.

This this particular Friday afternoon it was warm even by the water. The parking lot has a lot of big pine cone trees. They are beautiful trees according to Josh who loves trees. As my sister  smoothed out her job hunting outfit and proceeded to go inside the hotel to human resources, Josh  and I got out of the car and in about back half a minute treasure was found. Josh collected an arm load of pine cones. Little ones, big ones, and everything in between. He was like a happy pirate who found a treasure chest filled with gold and jewels but to him this was better.

My sister returned as were loading the pine cone treasure in the car. She wasn't the least bit surprised that in the 10 minutes  she took dropping off her application and résumé we had discovered a bounty of pine cones. When we put the last of the half dozen or so in the car Josh wanted to take one last look just in case he forgot one or six. While keeping a careful eye on him I watch him pick up a long branch. He comes running towards me dragging it behind him. He is happily smiling as he drags the branch from behind his back and tells me look what he found. A branch of pine cones. The branch was too big for the car so a nice man on the maintenance crew I think offered to cut it for us and that he did. A few minutes later we were driving down the freeway ramp with a trunk fillled with cines and branches with cones.

It was another day filled with unexpected treasure.
