Any Friday
I don't go to Black Friday sales. I remember once I went to one. I remember going to one or two in my lifetime. I don't like the crowds and I can do without the parking nightmares too. I am definitely not camping out at any store for days at a time to get $100 off of a big screen TV or whatever. The last Black Friday sale I remember going to was back in the late 80's. I had worked the holiday season at this small plaza near my house at the time. I worked in a retail store that is now closed called Emporium Capwell. I worked there for 3 months from October to January. That was the first pink slip I ever got too. But, that year in 1980 something my aunt wanted to go to the Black Friday sale there. I think she just wanted to get out of the house for the most part because at that time Black Friday was very far from what it is now. So, me and her went and we both brought jackets for half price and with my discount we saved a little more. There was nothing else that we found that we wanted and about an hour or so later we were on the road to my grandmother's house. My grandmother was surprised to see us so soon after Thanksgiving. Usually, she doesn't see us until maybe a week later. But, that year my aunt decided that she wanted to stop there to get lunch. She thought she was going to have a turkey sandwich. She didn't know that the only sandwich she was getting was an "air sandwich" as my dad used to say. My grandmother looked at her like she was nuts when she asked for one and she told her that wasn't she just there yesterday and didn't she notice that all the turkey was gone. I laughed to myself and helped myself to some leftover pumpkin pie that I was surprised to find leftover.
My aunt proudly produced the jacket that she had "scored" in her words at the plaza. I opened my bag too with a similar jacket in it. It was probably just a different color from hers but the same style. My grandmother probably thought that we were both a little nuts going out shopping on Black Friday or any other Friday at a plaza or mall. My grandmother liked shopping for little collectibles that didn't cost a lot at the thrift store near her house called the Turnabout Shop. She knew just about every person who worked there and she and I made a lot of visits there so many that they knew that I was her granddaughter. She was the opposite of my step grandfather who loved shopping. He could definitely shop until he dropped literally. He like to go on his shopping sprees in San Francisco at the higher end stores. The sales people knew him by name too.
So, this Black Friday I won't be going to any stores and probably won't be shopping online either. I plan to just chill with my family and watch TV and argue over the remote control. You know a typical Friday. (smile)
