Rabbit Food
I made some salad with dinner the other night and my mom and son had the same reaction when they saw it on their plates. Rabbit food. To both of then salad is "rabbit food". I rolled my eyes and told each of them that so called rabbit food was good for both of them. But, I did notice that if I throw on a couple more tomatoes on top of the rabbit food for my son it turns from rabbit food to something that he can tolerate to eat without frowning up his face and holding his nose like he smelled a bad smell. He loves tomatoes and always has since he was old enough to eat them. He can eat them like apples and most of the time the tomatoes don't have a chance to get to the salad aka rabbit food.
My mom is different. I don't think she would eat it without a fuss if I put gold coins on top of it worth a billion dollars. So, after several minutes of her pushing the salad to the other side of the plate and concentrating on the baked chicken and rice (rice is something she also has formed a dislike for over the past couple of months. I did remind her she has been eating it for as long as I have known her which is over 50 years and she just rolled her eyes and says that rice is too bland now. Now, I make Spanish rice just for her so it won't be so bland.) So, she finishes the chicken and rice and takes a few stabs at the salad. I am sitting there watching her from the corner of my eye and she knows it. After two bites she summons me to come and get her TV tray because she is done with the rabbit food on the plate. I take her tray and move it to the kitchen.
Fast forward to a few days later at her doctor's appointment and the doctor asked her about her diet and specifically about fruits and veggies including "rabbit food" as she calls it. She hesitated to answer and then said oh yeah she has it from time to time that I make her eat it. I laughed. The doctor laughed. I told the doctor what she called and doesn't like to eat it. He told her it is good for her and suggested other things she could put in her salad that might make it more interesting for her. Little did her know nothing was going to make it that interesting to her. But, he tried.
I will keep trying too. She keeps telling me that next I am going to try to make her a vegetarian. I just winked at her and said I might.
