Football Anyone?
Soccer or as my son calls it football is now the latest thing that the neighborhood kids are into now. It went from a summer of skateboarding, skate parks, skate boards, taking apart skateboards, buying trucks, wheels, grip tape, deciding on the size of boards, watching YouTube videos on skateboarding tricks and trying to do the tricks, making homemade ramps, buying ramps, skateboard parties, some spills and band aids, helmets and knee pads, elbow pads in the right colors, and who can out do who in street skating as opposed to skateboard park skating. The whole summer was consumed with anything skateboarding.
Next when school started it was basketball. And it got to be more basketball when the kid across the street got a big hoop for Christmas. That hoop though has been in hibernation since it has been doing more raining then sun shine. But, in between the rainy days and the glimpses of sun they are out there bouncing balls, taking shots, arguing about who fouled who and who double dribbled and how this one or that one was cheating according to the made up rules for the day. Right now the hoop hasn't come out much from the kids backyard. I am sure it must be pretty wet and muddy by now unless it is housed in a shed or garage. Nonetheless it is not in use right now.
So, that takes me to now and soccer. Balls are kicked and garages are banged and so are steps. At least my garage and steps. Noise is in full affect as big feet and little feet run across the pavement and yell and scream about goals, cheating, fouls, and which ball is better and who is the better player. Even a couple of bets are made for fruit snacks as the prize if they can do whatever it is that they challenge each other to do. Usually kick a goal. Did I mention that none of them except one kid can actually play it well.? But they all try and have fun. That's the most important thing, having fun and playing their version of the game, you know you make up the rules as you go along and if someone does something "wrong" oops, new rule. And the most important thing about playing this game you can play it in between rain showers and in rain showers if they could. Puddles only make it more fun. After all who wouldn't like to kick a ball out of a foot of water and get all wet for the sake of maybe making a goal or passing it to your friend on the other side of the puddle. It is all in good fun.
I don't know how long this soccer playing will last. All I know is that today my son came home with an old net, some soccer shoes his friend's sister gave him, sun glasses to keep the sun out of your eyes while you play, guess that is for when we actually see the sun again since it has been raining every day this month, and 5 soccer balls. Apparently he is the equipment manager for the "team" of the neighborhood soccer kids.
So, rain or shine I know that after school tomorrow all the "equipment" will be going out in front of the house for the "team" to play. Unless it is storming which is the forecast.
