Speaking of Birthdays....
Speaking of birthdays...when my mom started this sentence I knew what was coming next. Yesterday was my son's birthday. He turned 11 yrs old. I guess you would call him a "tween" these days. Although, he acts more like a "teen" but nonetheless my sister was sitting across from her visiting and to give my son his birthday gift and I was sitting on the side of her and as soon as my son came to get his gift from my sister my mom took one look at the card in his hand and she started that sentence that she has said for the past couple of years. My mom hasn't been able to remember celebrating her birthday in October since she had her stroke. So, last year my son shared his birthday with her. He gave her a party hat, a balloon and they blew out the candles on his cake together. He told her that they can share the day and he even offered one of his gifts to her. So, when she started the "Speaking of birthdays..." sentence we all knew that she was going to say that nobody did anything on hers and that we all would remind her that we did and she still wouldn't remember and not believe us anyway. We can drag out the pictures and tell her all about the day but she will not remember and look at us like we are speaking a language she doesn't understand. But, we do it anyway in hopes to see some sort of recognition in her eyes. Something to give us hope that this one thing she remembers just a little bit. So, my son ran to his room got his balloon and told her again that she had a birthday but he was more then happy to share his with her again. He asked her if she remembered the pizza we had on her birthday and the big brownie he made her and the lemon cake we had. She shook her head no then she told him that she sort of remembered.
My mom told me that for the longest time she thought that her birthday was on Halloween because that is when her parents used to celebrate it instead on the 4th when she was actually born. So, for the first 7 years of her life she thought she was a Halloween baby. She said that her parents weren't rich and always worked two or three jobs just to make ends meet and keep a roof over their heads and they moved a lot when she was younger and sometimes she had to stay with other relatives when times really got bad so she told me she thinks the reason that they celebrated her birthday on Halloween was that they didn't have any money at the first of the month to make her a cake so they did it when they had money. My grandmother used to make my mom's cakes every year on Halloween. I guess that is part of the reason she does remember Halloween and likes the day.
So, yesterday we had two celebrations again. One for my son whose actual birthday was yesterday and one for my mom who actually doesn't remember hers. But, it was all good filled with fun and good times and memories.
