The Marina

At the end of a long week I sometimes like to go to the Marina with my son. It is relaxing to look a the water but of course with him I am doing more walking then sitting. But, it is a place that my father used to take our family on those weekends when we had nothing to do and would say to him we, my sister and I, are so bored. He would tell us ok we can all go to the marina. We would run to the car and my mom would be 5 steps behind us frowning. She was frowning because she knew what was going to happen once we got there. We all did.

Once we got there with my father driving and me in the front seat he would ask did I want to "drive" of course I did. What 7 year old wouldn't want to "drive"? Of course I wasn't really driving neither of my parents would let a child really drive. Driving to me was sitting on his lap steering the car with his help and pretending I was doing it all by myself. At that time there used to be dips with signs warning you of dips ahead in the road. I loved the dips because it made the car go up and down almost like you would see a low rider do back in the day. There were 2 dips that I would "drive" over and me and my sister would laugh every time we would come to one. We thought that they were fun.

My mom didn't like the idea of me "driving" and would always complain to my dad about him letting me do it. But, he would remind her he was controlling the car I wasn't really driving anything. Usually, my "driving" lesson lasted only a few minutes and then it was over. Back to my dad driving and we would park the car and look at the water, all the waves in the water and sometimes the sailboats and water skiers if they were out there. We would count how many seconds the water skiers could ski in the water before falling and before the boat would circle around to pick them up. Some people had dogs that went swimming in the water. I was amazed by the swimming dogs back then. My dog hated bath time so I knew that he would not ever be a swimming dog in the ocean if he could help it.

After we would leave the marina we would all go to lunch. I used to love it when we went to have burgers because I always got root beer and a ice cream cone for dessert. Over the years we visited a lot of places and ate a lot of burgers and ice cream.  A tradition I try to continue with my son when I can. Although he is not much of an ice cream eater like me. Usually he will just have some fruit and I will have the cone.

I miss my dad very much. People often say that my son looks a little like him. I am glad because when I look at him it sort of brings me closer to my dad who loved to go to the marina.
