The Noise of Neighbors
I moved in this neighborhood almost 6 years ago. At first glance you would think that this neighborhood is pretty quiet with the exception of the trains that you can hear nightly in the distance and the planes and helicopters that fly over head sometimes in the night. For the most part that is true. Most of the neighbors own their homes and have been here for years and years. The man next door is very nice and his dog, Yoshi, is friendly when he escapes from the backyard a couple of times per month and sits in front of our steps and waits for my son to notice him so he can play with him. Our neighbors on the other side of us in the building next door are all nice. This block has pretty cool people living on with one or two exceptions.
One of those exceptions lives directly across the street. This woman lives there with her kids and lots of other people come and go during the month but she is the only permanent resident as far as I can tell. I never spoke to her except once. My son used to like to take pictures of the moon whenever he saw it and this one night he was in the bathroom taking a picture of the moon with a cell phone camera, mind you not a good cell phone at that, and if you have ever taken a picture with a cheap cell phone then you know what I mean, especially at night, So, on this particular night she was standing outside of her house smoking with her friend and she must have noticed the flash from the camera and she stomps up the steps and bangs on the door. She didn't come right away she waited a good 20 minutes later after he had taken the picture of the moon. Well, since I wasn't expecting company at 9:30 pm I asked who it was. I didn't get an answer for about a minute then I heard that voice, that same voice that is always hollering at someone at her house across the street. She screamed, a neighbor. Well, she said that my son was taking a picture of her and that she was inside of her house and the flash came all through the house from the front of the house to the back of the house and did I know it was illegal for people to take pictures of other people.
A long time ago, my mom told me that you can't argue with some people and this is one person who didn't seem to want to listen or know anything so I politely thanked her and sent her on her way back across the street. That was my first and last encounter with her personally.
But, it certainly wouldn't be the first and last encounter with her and the police. Since I have moved here she has had numerous police visits. Mostly for fighting with whomever. She yells, screams, hollers, throws things, tears up things at different targets, usually people. I have heard and saw so many fights and arguments and so has every neighbor on this block, more then I can count on both hands. These incidents take place about twice a month. You can almost set your clock by them. The first week of the month and the last week of the month and on some occasions the middle week of the month depending.
My friend and I were talking about neighborhoods the other day. Yes, she has me beat in her neighborhood but in my next neighborhood, and hopefully my last for a while, I would just like some peace. To be able to go outside and not fill like I am in an episode of the Twilight Zone.
