Basball Fever

My younger brother who is now in his 30's used to collect baseball cards when he was younger. Topps baseball cards that used to come with the bubble gum back in the day. He probably had a couple hundred by the time he stopped collecting them. I don't know what happened to them all but my guess is that in a move they got lost. That is really too bad because he used to enjoy it so very much and in his collection were some now retired players.

My son, Josh, and I went to the dollar store yesterday, yes, our favorite place to shop these days, I had to get a couple of things and he wanted a couple of things. I told him he can get two things only this time. So, as I hauled around a heavy hand cart with some heavy bleach and a spray bottle of what they called awesome in it, I have no idea what awesome is, all I know is that I used it to clean some grime off of a storage thing in the kitchen and it worked well, so I got more awesome, Josh walked around the store in the toy aisle trying to decide what he should get that he didn't have already.

I tried to hurry him up because my hand was starting to hurt and the hand cart was starting to get heavy dangling in mid air. So, he had a look on his face, the look of he didn't really know what he wanted look. As the lines grew longer and longer, I told him to choose something because it was time to go.  Finally, he choose a toy that said "Gross" on it. I was not surprised. It was something that looked like a cross in between play dough and silly putty with a green color.  He said it reminded him of snot. Again, I was not surprised.  Then we walked to the front of the store and on a rack just sitting there with a bunch of other stuff were baseball cards. I didn't know they had baseball cards there probably because I never paid attention to that particular rack.

Josh saw them too and he asked could he have a pack. I told him he could. Josh was not born yet when my brother had his collection of baseball cards but I guess he must have overheard a conversation or two about him having some back in the day. Josh grabbed a pack and asked could he have two packs. I nodded that he could but that was it. Ten dollars and ten minutes later we were out of the store and headed home.

Josh couldn't wait to open his green gross stuff and show it to his grandma who jumped at the sight of it and asked what in the world was it. Josh told her it was gross and she agreed it was gross and then he laughed and told her that was the name of it and he got it because it reminded him of green snot. She didn't look too pleased but since she is the grandmother of 4 grandson's with him being the youngest I don't think she was really too surprised of the treasures that Josh brings back from the dollar store or any store. After  explaining to his grandmother why he got it and what he can do with it and telling her it made a sound that sounded like a burp also, he went back to the bag and got the baseball cards.

Carefully, he opened the packages and found out that included were basketball and football cards too in the package. He sorted out all the baseball cards and slipped a rubber band around them and grabbed some wrapping paper. I asked him who he was going to give them too and he said that he was going to give them to my brother. He said that it was going to be his Christmas gift. Then he had another idea and asked could he have the tin I got to put cookies in and I asked him what he needed it for he said since he didn't have a box he thought he could use the tin to put the cards in and that way his uncle wouldn't know it was baseball cards. I told him he could use it and in no time at all it was all wrapped up in his special way.

He asked me did I think my brother would be surprised. I said to him I thought he would be VERY surprised and that was the best gift he could give him. So, now he can cross my brother off of his short Christmas list.
