Senior Citizen Hood
My best friend from high school informed me that we, she and I are now senior citizens. I thought that it had something to do with joining the AARP which we are both old enough to join since our birthdays this year put us at that point. I asked her where did she come to that conclusion from and she said that her mom told her. I just laughed.
My friend's mom is a character. I met her mom over 30 years ago when I met my friend in the 9th grade. I always thought that her mom was pretty nice and pretty cool and I still do but sometimes her mom makes me laugh or just shake my head. Her mom will be turning 70 or 71 in about a week. My friend had to move back with her mom due to circumstances she couldn't control so it has been an interesting experience for her living with her parents again. Her mom has been doing little quirky things that she hasn't done before and never wants to stay at home. She is always somewhere else such as the laundry matt, bingo, the store, the post office just anywhere besides home because she feels if she sits too long she will get old. So, everyday she makes a place to go for herself and goes and goes and goes. And her mom has cats. She had so many at one time she was known as the cat lady in the neighborhood. My friend found someone to take most of the cats to the animal shelter but there are still plenty of them left. I counted 4 at last count. So, when her mom said that we, my friend and I are now seniors I was not surprised.
She says we can get senior discounts now at some places and eat for free at some on senior days which are mostly Tuesdays or Wednesdays and of course on your birthday at the bingo place seniors get to play free on their birthdays. She said that the only person who lives with her who is not a senior is her granddaughter who is in her early 20's. She is young and has about 30 years before she turns into us, seniors.
My friend was not pleased about being called a senior at 50 and she tried to explain to her mom that 50 was far from senior citizen hood but her mom was not hearing it. In her mind 50 is a senior and that is all it is to it.
I told my friend that I guess as far as she is concerned we should be booking rooms at a senior living center near us and signing up for shuffle board and bingo. Not too mention cashing in on those senior discounts she was talking about.
We had a good laugh and didn't really take any of it too seriously. So, we just nodded as her mom continued talking about all the perks that come with senior citizen hood and when she was done we both signed up for our AARP memberships. One day, and one day soon, maybe, we just might need them to get our senior all you can eat play bingo on your birthday free discounts.
And honestly, I am looking forward to all those senior discounts when I get old enough for them that is. And that is not today.
