Family Cooking

My sister is not the best cook in the world. I got the cooking gene which is what I always tell her and she always laughs when I say it. But, she does try and that is the most important part the trying. So, it was no surprise when she asked me to help her make yams, candied yams minus the marsh mellows. She doesn't really care for the marsh mellow part on top. I love the marsh mellows on top. My grandmother used to put them on top of the yams and I would take the piece that was slightly burned. I just like mine extra crispy.

Now, my sister is exactly an early riser either so it was not surprising that she showed up at almost noon with no yams. I asked her where the yams were and she told me that she forgot to tell me that we would have to go to the store and buy them. That's my little sister always forgetting to tell me the most important things. Well, after I convinced my son that it was way too cold to wear shorts to the store we were off. I honestly don't like going to the store right before any holiday.

Last year we went to the store on Thanksgiving Eve to get some eggs, milk, cranberry sauce, and potatoes. The store was just newly remodeled and reopened and nobody in that packed store knew where anything was. We were all wandering around like chickens with our necks cut off running aimlessly down the aisles looking for things. A few of us were asking each other if they knew where various things were and then we headed in the direction of where the person thought it was. After we found the handful of things we had come for then the task of finding the shortest line was upon us. Of course, when the store is crowded there are only the least amount of checkers open. That day I think that out of the 6 they had in the store not including the self check out there were half of them open and so the challenge of trying to find the one that was going the fastest was on. I got into one line which was the shortest of all of them, only 6 people ahead of me, and then it happens as it always does, someone needed a price check in the front of the line. The bagger did the best they could to race to the aisle where the butter was and come back before too many of us grumbled any more about how slow the line was moving. Then of course, the woman in front of me asked if was ok that she got out of line to grab one more thing and she would be quick. She wasn't quick as you might have guessed and it was almost her turn when she got back.

That is why I try not to go shopping on holiday eve's or close to holiday eve's. But, today couldn't be helped. How can you make yams without the yams? So, when we got to the store the parking lot was packed. We managed to find a spot sort of close to the store so we didn't have to walk a mile from the parking spot to the store. Once we got inside the store it wasn't so terribly bad. The lot was full but the store was half full. We found the yams, butter and all the rest of the ingredients needed to make them. The lines were longer then I thought they would be but to pass the time I browsed through the magazines they had at the front of the check stands. Joshua grabbed a candy bar that was on sale and ten minutes we were all checked out and out of the store. The traffic was horrible but we made it back safely.

My sister looked at all the ingredients needed to make them and her eyes opened wide when they were all placed on the kitchen counter. I told her not to worry her big sister would always be here to help her through it all.  With a little help and a little patience and lots of ingredients an hour later the yams were ready to go in the oven and all were happy. Another Christmas Eve side dish done.

My sister said that next year she would make them for me. I just nodded in agreement and laughed and told her that will be the day, to quote my grandmother.
