Let the Party Begin!
My son, Josh's birthday, is Monday. According to him it should be a national holiday. Not so much in getting gifts but he wants a day just to do everything he wants to do meaning not doing anything associated with school for the day. I can understand that. My birthday is close to Memorial Day and some years it even fell on Memorial Day and I was so happy that I didn't have to take a test, read a boring book for English class, write a paper for anything, study for anything and not even think about school. Not, that I didn't like school but when you are a kid most of your time is spent in school or doing homework until summer when you are free at last. Free for a couple of months anyway.
I asked him what he wanted to do. He told me that he wanted to eat his dirt and worm cake, which is a chocolate cake with crushed Oreo cookies on top with gummy worms. He had that cake when he was either 6 or 7. Now, the cake is making another appearance on the birthday table. I must admit it was a good cake. Then he said he wanted to eat at MacDonald's a happy meal. Mac Donald's is a treat for him because we rarely go there. That is what he wants for his birthday lunch and he wants to get 9 balloons since he is going to be 9 from the dollar store. I asked about gifts and he said that he doesn't care too much about a lot of gifts for his birthday because Christmas is coming and he usually gets a lot of gifts then.
I did get him one gift though and he has cards from relatives and friends that I have for him that we can use to decorate with besides the balloons. We will recycle the "Happy Birthday" sign from last year and hang that up too. Last year it was all about Buzz and Woody. This year no theme necessary just a dirt cake, some balloons and our homemade birthday sign that is good enough for him plus his trip to Mac Donald's to get his happy meal and free hamburger from the free ticket that he got trick or treating on Halloween.
Of course, since his birthday is on a Monday school will be in session. But, as long as he has his cake and his treat from MacDonald's I think he will be okay.
His 9th birthday. Wow! We have come a long way in 9 years and we still have a long, long way to go. It will be a smooth ride sometimes and bumpy sometimes too as he gets older but whatever it brings I am ready for it bring on the next 9!!!
