Being Merry
Today is Christmas. I love this holiday but I am glad that for me the day is almost done for me. I got my first "Merry Christmas" call at 7am. It was a wake up call for me since I didn't intend on getting up that early on Christmas day. Even when I was little I never woke up that early on Christmas morning, I don't think. I looked a the caller ID and it was my uncle. I have no idea what he was doing up at that time either. He doesn't have any little ones but when he got older he started sleeping less and waking up earlier.
I answered half awake and he asked if I was awake. I said oh yeah been up since 5am. He laughed and then wished me a Merry Christmas and asked if my little one was awake. I told him no not yet since he stayed up way past his bedtime he wouldn't be up for a while. Later I would find out how wrong I was. He asked if anyone else was up so he could wish them a Merry Christmas. I told him no everyone was snug in their beds still dreaming of sugar plums. He told me that he was not doing anything special but babysitting his grandson. Since his grandson is 2 years old that is more then enough. I told him I would have my mom call him when she woke up.
About 5 seconds later my little sugar plum woke up. And that was the end of my sleep for the day. First thing he wanted to do was what all kids wan to do on Christmas morning run to see if Santa came and then open the presents. But, this little boy had to wait. My mom was asleep in the front room today where the tree and the gifts were so I told him to wait until granny got up. Until then he watched Christmas cartoons and I just laid in bed half awake. Thirty minutes later granny was awake and the fun began. After millions of pictures and a ton of wrapping paper that was happily thrown on the floor to reveal what was underneath the gifts were unwrapped and I had captured many smiles for my Christmas photo book that is in the works which nobody knows about yet.
Then my sister came to the door and later my nephew. Meanwhile, my mom kept reminding everyone how old she was and how her time of cooking was a thing of the past. I didn't disagree with her. She claimed she didn't want to do anything but then proceeded to try to do everything. I like that about her. After about 40 times of me, my sister and my nephews telling her to sit down she finally sat down for a second and then decided to sweep the floor. We couldn't win and didn't even try. We let her sweep and until she was done and then I had an idea. I gave her one last present to open that was left mistakenly under the tree. She got happy and sat down and opened it like my son does, throwing wrapping everywhere. That was just enough time of make and serve her plate to her. She was not happy that it was a paper plate but she was the one who said to get them because she didn't want to do or look at dirty dishes. I reminded her of that fact and she then took the plate and looked at the contents. She approved of all that was on her plate except for the scallop potatoes which in her words looked like "slop from the store." I told her it was "slop from the store." She could only laugh and then not eat them. Which was fine with me.
I love my mom dearly and without her Christmas would not be the same. Merry Christmas Mom!
