Santa Clause is coming to Town

My son still believes in Santa, sort of. For the past week or so packages have been delivered to the door. These packages contained various things that are for my mom, brother and even my son.  Usually, I try to intercept these packages from my son and mom so they won't ruin their Christmas surprises but on some days I am not as successful as other days. I have a routine though when I hear the UPS or USPS truck park outside of the house I get up and try to distract both of them, which is not easy, so I can get to the door first and when I get to the door I open it and hope that the package is small enough or comes in an envelope, so I can tuck it under my shirt and then move at lightening speed, or at least faster then I usually do, and put it in my hiding place in the room in the closet. I have a gift box in the closet that is disguised as a junk box so nobody will want to look in it and be the wiser. I put gifts at the bottom and papers on top. The box is in the front of the closet not hiding so they won't be suspicious as if I put it in the back of the closet. I have to try to out smart them in this house especially at holiday time. So far my plan is working like a charm.

But, like I said some days I am more successful then others and today was one of the other days. I didn't hear a truck pull up today just some footsteps, faint footsteps, almost sounded like children's footsteps, coming up the steps. I was hoping that nobody else hear it but sometimes my son had package radar and can hear them delivering packages in a ten mile radius and knows that something might possibly come for him. Today was one of those days. He heard the creep, creep up the steps too and he looked at me and I looked at him. Then we both looked at the door at the same time. I knew that I couldn't out run him. He is much, much younger and much, much faster and once he gets fired up he moves even faster. My next plan was to possibly trick him and tell him I didn't hear anything it was just the wind. The only thing is that he knew it wasn't the wind and told me so. He told me how could that be the wind when it is not windy at all. So, on to plan B. Once he opened the door and discovered that indeed there was not only one but two small boxes waiting on the porch he eagerly grabbed them and read the names on the packages.

Since both the packages had my name on them that was my plan B to tell him that they were for me, which they were, so he got a little disappointed and asked me could he open them. I knew who they were from and what was in them so I gave him permission to open one of them and I would open the other later. I gave him the package with the candy in it. It actually had one of his favorite candies in it. In a little bag that said "retro candy" there were candy canes, and some chocolate mints and then in a bigger bag were some tootsie roll holiday pops. He got all excited and his little eyes lit up and of course he started opening the bags. He couldn't wait to taste the delicious candy.

Granny came back in the front room from the kitchen, she had missed the mad dash for packages and she was curious to know what he was doing. He told her opening candy. He informed her where the candy came from, a package on the porch. So, granny said that it must be for Christmas and that Santa will be mad at him because he opened it. His eyes got big and with candy in hand he told granny no Santa would be mad. Granny asked him why not if the packages were for Christmas and he opened them already. He then explained to her that these packages were not from Santa, it was totally different, Santa hadn't arrived yet so these packages are from someone else, a person most likely and that person is not Santa. So, Santa had no reason to be mad at him but he wasn't sure about her. Granny asked him why would Santa be mad at her and he told her because she hasn't been good all year and Santa knows who has been naughty and nice.

With that Josh, continued to eat the candy cane he had in his hand. Granny couldn't help but laugh and tell him that he better be good too.

When my box of gifts are placed under the tree in a few days on Christmas eve after they are both asleep I think that they will both be pleasantly surprised that  both of them have gifts from Santa.
