Ornaments
I love the month of December. I love it of course because my son's birthday and of course my favorite holiday, besides my own birthday, yes, I consider my birthday a holiday, I like this month because of one more thing that I get to do this month that I don't get to do any other time. I like to go shopping for ornaments. Yes, ornament shopping.
About 25 years ago I lived near a Walgreen's store which was only 4 blocks away from my house at the time. Every year they would have cute Disney ornaments on sale. When my friend was pregnant I brought her all kinds of Disney ornaments for her tree to celebrate Christmas with her then newborn daughter. I would get myself some too. Every year, when I lived alone, I would get a little table top living Christmas tree which I tried to plant in the yard after Christmas but my thumbs are far from green and they would not be living for too long. But, my little table top living Christmas tree would be filled with ornaments. I was surprised it didn't fall over. Walgreen's also had the sparkle ornaments that I liked too which were usually on sale for 2 for a dollar at that time. I would get tons of those. I would either put them on my tree or give them to my mom for her tree.
I think I got the love of ornaments from my grandmother. She loved them too and had tons. Of course she needed tons for the 8 foot trees that my grandfather would haul in the house every year. She had old ones, new ones and even falling apart ones. But, they all went on the tree no matter what condition they were or how old they were. The smaller ones would go on top and we needed a ladder to put them there. The medium ones would go in the middle and the larger ones would go at the bottom. That was the ornament order of all of her Christmas trees and now kind of with mine too. I am not so strict though and if my son puts a big one on top or a small one at the bottom so be it. I was always amazed when I looked at all the ornaments she had. We would unpack boxes and boxes of ornaments that my grandfather would drag out of the attic every year. I lost count after the 15th box. Then there were the boxes and boxes of beads and lights. She didn't put tinsel on her tree that what the beads were for or garland. She had a lot of red beads, white beads and green and the order of the beads was red, green and white. Funny the things you remember about traditions.
My son and I took a trip to the dollar store for party decorations for his birthday and I passed by the Christmas aisle. They had put out new ornaments, or at least ones I hadn't seen the last time I was there. These sort of reminded me of the ones my grandmother used to have. Hers were older and probably didn't come from the dollar store but I loved them. My son was screaming at me to come on so he could get to his favorite aisle, the toy aisle so I carefully put them in our hand held carry cart and moved on to the party aisle and got the appropriate decorations for a soon to be 9 year old with his approval.
When we returned home and unpacked all the items my son asked me where the ornaments were. He wanted to place them in the proper spot on the tree. He asked me if I had any old ornaments from when I was little. I told him I didn't. The only ornaments I have now are the ones that we got today and a few years ago and he told me that is too bad but when he gets old he will keep all these ornaments that we have now and put them on his Christmas tree fo his children. He asked me when got old would I still be alive to see it. I told him I hoped so but if not I would be watching from heaven with all the other angels. He thought about that for a minute and then he said well he better be good then because it seems like I will never stop watching him. He's right. He better be good and hopefully I will never stop.
